What Is Total Fat?

By Myfawny Craighter

Too much total fat in our diet is helping contribute to heart disease and obesity. We have to look at our lifestyle in order to review our options and make important changes in limiting our total fat consumption. A healthy lifestyle is paramount to feeling good and looking our best. It is not about losing weight but about living a longer, healthier life and setting examples for our children.

The total fat enigma came about when scientists discovered that there are "good" fats and there are "bad" fats. The average person is inundated with terms such as unsaturated or monounsaturated. Bad fats will usually be fats that are solid when unheated. Examples of these are animal fats, shortenings and butter. Good fats are the monounsaturated fats that are liquid. Examples of these are peanut oil and vegetable oil.

Everything we eat during the day contributes a portion to our total fat percentage. The key to lowering cholesterol and the bad fats is by finding those that cannot only lower your cholesterol but also help to lower your total fat calories.

Need For A Healthy Heart

As we become more aware of the need for a healthy heart, the importance in monitoring cholesterol becomes vital. Healthy cooking is not something to be dreaded. It does not mean a life filled with bland or tasteless food.

Cooking light reduces calories and helps lower your total fat intake by making a few substitutions that you may not notice, but in the end your scales will. You can prepare many of the same foods you love to eat by making a few changes that will hardly be noticed.

When Cooking Pay Attention To How Much Fat Or Oil

Many of us do not pay attention to how much fat or oil we use to cook our food. Frying adds unnecessary calories and fat that we can do without. You can try lowering your total fat intake by skipping the oil and trying a cooking spray. Or better still, instead of frying, try baking.

You will be surprised how delicious it can be. Instead of using a flour batter to coat meat, consider a bread crumb or a crushed cereal coating. The outside gets a nice crispy finish and you get a healthier meal.

Prepare Foods You Love

Whatever healthy cooking tips you use to reduce your total fat, make sure that you are preparing foods you love. Eating right is about more than just a fad diet. It is about changing an unhealthy lifestyle to help you live a better, longer life.

We should eat to live rather than live to eat. Watching our calories, total fat or carbohydrates is important but so too is enjoying the foods that fuel our lives.
