Running Shop With The Right Equipment

By Spiridon Rafter

The best buys from a running shop are made of lightweight, stretchy, cushy, breathable, special material that will put more bounce into your step and wick away more moisture from your body. On the cold days, you’ll be wearing fewer, but more efficient, articles of clothing to keep you warm.

In the summer, you’ll be able to still clothe yourself and not have a sweaty shirt clinging to your body like glue. You won’t have to worry about chafing, blistering, skin irritation or other discomforts that could ruin your competitiveness. While specialty running apparel costs more than your basic cotton items, you’ll find these garments are well-made and last longer.

Your first consideration will probably be running shoes. Selecting the right pair of shoes will protect you from blisters, shin splints, runner’s knee and other painful injuries. There are men’s running shoes and women’s running shoes. There are shoes for people with flat feet and shoes for people with high arches.

The Right Shoes For Runners

There are runners with heel cushioning and runners with forefoot cushioning. Fit is the most important consideration for you, so you’ll need to try several different brands to see which strikes your fancy. Be aware that you may need to review your options and buy half a size larger and that you do not need to "break in" running shoes.

Either you love them or you don’t. Every 500 miles, you’ll need a new pair to avoid injury, so be sure to write down your miles. Some brands to check out include: New Balance Running Shoes (for cross-training), Newton Running Shoes (for racing) and the new Nike Run Avant (for road running).

Socks With A Synthetic Blend

What can be worse than sweaty, smelly feet? Well, perhaps blisters, bunions and gouges are just as bad. As you can imagine, choosing the right running socks from the running shop is just as vital to your comfort level as choosing the right shoes. While most of your current sock stock may be made of cotton, you’ll want to avoid wearing these during your runs. Cotton will keep your feet wet and almost guarantee a blister.

Instead, choose synthetic blends made from polyester or acrylic. Runners World Magazine recommends the following brands: Darn Tough Vermont Run/Bike 1/4 Cushion (for thicker socks), Bridgedale X-Hale Speed Diva and Demon (for water-wicking socks), Teko EcoMerino Wool Ultra-Light Micro (for winter warmth and shorter distances), Nike Elite Structure Running (for the marathon runner), Feetures Bamboo & Wool Ultra Light Cushion Quarter (for extra-sweaty runners), Drymax 1/4 Trail Running (for short-distance versatile cross-training), Injinji Performance Series Mini-Crew (for long distance summer runs), Eurosocks Sprint Silver (for short, cold runs) and Pearl Izumi Silk-Lite and Ultra-Lite (for short summer runs).

Stepping Up Your Game With A Running Watch

Running watches are an ideal selection from the running shop if you want to step up your game and compete -- or even just track your progress to stay motivated. Watches may come with stopwatch chronograph features to time your mileage or laps, memory storage, countdown/interval timers, speed and distance tracking, heart rate monitors, computer interface/software and even GPS.

According to Runners World, the top personal trainer watches include the Suunto T4, the Garmin Forerunner 305, the Polar RS800 and the Timex Ironman Bodylink. More basic stopwatches to consider are the Oakley D2, the Highgear Axis, the Adidas ClimaCool II 100, the Timex 150-Lap Ironman, Nike Triax Speed 50 and the FreeStyle Flow 100.

More Facts About Running

I am pregnant. Is it still safe to run while I’m expecting?
Running while you are pregnant is still highly debated. There are risks involved for anyone that runs. Some doctors advise that women abstain from running while pregnant because of the jolting motion it can cause. Others believe that it is safe as long as the woman is not in a high risk pregnancy.

If you have never run as exercise prior to becoming pregnant it is probably not a good idea to start when you do become pregnant. If, however, you are a long time runner then it may be perfectly fine to continue your exercise routine provided you have cleared it with your physician first.
