Protein Powder Shakes To Lose Weight

By Tracy Kerr-Walshe

High-protein, low-carbohydrate diets are a very hot trend and with good reason. Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. Hair and nails are mostly made of protein. Your body uses protein to build and repair tissues.

You also use protein to make enzymes, hormones and other body chemicals. Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. Protein is also a boon for your metabolism. That’s why products like protein powder supplements are being used by athletes and bodybuilders.

Whey protein powder is one of the key ingredients in many weight loss products. However, protein enriched powders can be bland to the taste buds, so you may choose to review your options and add extra ingredients to make them more flavorful.

Start Your New Day With A Healthy Breakfast

Eating a healthy breakfast is essential to weight loss. It prevents you from getting that awful mid-morning crash that has you grabbing for calorie laden donuts and muffins. A healthy protein enriched shake is a much better choice.

Along with the protein you’ll get a burst of nutrients from the fresh fruit. This fruit and bran protein shake recipe is very easy to prepare and will keep you going until lunchtime.

Preparing A Fruit And Bran Protein Shake

You’ll need 1 cup of apple juice, 1/2 of a ripe banana, 1/3 cup of sliced peaches or blueberries, 1 teaspoon of bran, 3 tablespoons of protein powder, and about 6 ice cubes. Combine all the ingredients in a blender and blend until thick and smooth.

If you find the shake to be too thick, just add more juice or some low fat milk until you get the consistency that you want.

If your sweet tooth is acting up, you can still stick to your protein enriched diet. This whey protein chocolate mint recipe is great for a mid-afternoon shake or even as a dessert.

A Recipe For Whey Protein Chocolate Mint

Blend together 2 scoops of chocolate flavored powder, 1 cup of low fat, sugar free vanilla ice cream, 2 cups of non fat milk, 1 cup of oatmeal, 1 cup of water, and a dash of peppermint extract. For a little indulgence and some extra protein, you can also add a tablespoon of peanut butter.

Protein powders aren’t just for shakes, as these supplements can be added to almost all of your favorite foods, such as baked goods, tomato sauces, mashed potatoes and even scrambled eggs.

Whey Protein Powders Dissolve More Completely

Whey protein powders are especially good to cook with because they dissolve more completely than other types of powders. You can also blend the powder into foods like cottage cheese and yogurt.

If you are using protein powder shakes and drinks as a part of a diet regimen, then make sure that you are still getting plenty of nutrients from fruits and vegetables. In their desire to cut back carbs, many people forget that fruits and veggies contain the vital vitamins, fiber and antioxidants needed to prevent disease.

However, animal foods that are high in protein are usually also high in saturated fats, which will increase the risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and several types of cancer. Protein powder does make an excellent supplement but make sure that you are getting the other essential nutrients that you need to live a healthy life.
