Probiotic Supplement For Your Digestive System

By Tracy Kerr-Walshe

Probiotics supplements are widely used to treat stomach, bowel and intestinal problems. Of the infinite types of bacteria out there, it takes very specialized strains to work on the gut’s flora. Since the digestive tract is such a volatile quagmire of acids, it can be difficult to derive probiotic capsules that can survive such an environment.

Researchers are looking at other uses for the probiotic supplement to see if there is any merit to using them to work on cancer or other serious disease treatments. Currently, there are several FDA-approved products on the market to help with digestive functioning.

Twelve Strains Of Friendly Bacteria

Dr. Ohhira Probiotics 12 PLUS is a popular supplement containing twelve strains of friendly bacteria (probiotics), prebiotic nutrients, four organic acids and micronutrients like vitamins, minerals and amino acids. This product claims to contain a strain of TH10 bacteria that is "6.25 x stronger than any naturally-occurring lactic acid bacteria."

Additionally, the product promises that only mountain spring water has been used and that there are no pesticides, meat byproducts, artificial additives or preservatives. While Dr. Ohhira’s majestic story about the ingredients being "hand-gathered from the mountains and seas of Japan" sounds a little superfluous, Dr. Ohhira himself was awarded "Best Scientist of the Year" and his formula was heralded as "Best Product of the Year" by the Japanese Food and Dairy Association in 2004.

Improved Digestion And A Stronger Immune System

Culturelle Probiotic is a well-respected probiotic supplement. The company is a proud member of the Better Business Bureau and a disclaimer on their site doesn’t mislead consumers to believe their product is a magic cure-all, as many other inflated-claim supplements do.

Instead, they say adding Culturelle to your diet "can be a great way to achieve and maintain optimal core health -- improved digestion and a stronger immune system." Their product contains lactobacillus gg, the most clinically proven strain of probiotic bacteria and incorporates "state of the art packaging" to ensure there has been no moisture, light, heat or air interference.

In the Pharmacy Times 2007 over-the-counter survey, it was reported that Culturelle is the most pharmacist-recommended probiotic. Compared to the competition, Culturelle promises to deliver bacteria that will survive stomach acid to form a stronger barrier against bad bacteria.

Daily Digestive Tracker

Align is a third probiotic supplement worth considering. These daily probiotic capsules promise to "help even out the ups and downs of common digestive upsets such as constipation, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, urgency, gas and bloating."

The Align probiotic contains bifantis, a clinically proven probiotic strain that has fared well in diarrhea tests especially. Along with your purchase, you’ll get their "Daily Digestive Tracker," which will help you chart your progress toward a healthy digestive system over the course of four weeks.

They say within a week you’ll notice decreased gas and bloating, within two you’ll have firmer stools, within three you’ll appear visibly healthier to others, within four you’ll be eating spicy and rich foods again and within five weeks you’ll be able to weather eating out, traveling and stress upsets.

More Facts About Probiotics...

Where are probiotics found?
A probiotic can be found in many different foods. It really depends on what food you are eating. Lactic acid bacteria have been used for years and you can find it in yogurt and other milk products. Bifidobacterium is another bacterium that is found in probiotic food sources and supplements.

If you are not able to digest lactose products, which are where most probiotic supplements are added, you can take them in the form of supplements. You can buy Escherichia coli M-17 from BioBalance in their ProBactrix supplement. But going back to the most naturally occurring probiotic, you can find that in yogurt and some milk. Just look to see that there are active cultures in it. In your body probiotics are found in the small intestine.
