Magnesium In Food

By Tracy Kerr-Walshe

Magnesium, the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body and is needed for bone health, as well as tissue, organ and cellular development. This mineral ensures the heart beats regularly, oxygen gets to all cells, the proper release of biochemicals takes place and bones grow strong. People may need a review of their options and use magnesium supplement for many reasons.

For instance, patients taking diuretics (Lasix, Bumex, Edecrin and Hydrochlorothiazide), antibiotics (Gentamicin and Amphotericin) or anti-neoplastic medication (Cisplatin) generally need more magnesium. Alcoholics and diabetics benefit from the supplement as well. Patients with Crohn’s Disease, enteropathy or enteritis, or those who have recently undergone intestinal surgery may suffer from a magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium In Your Diet

Magnesium is found in a number of foods. To get the recommended daily value of 310-320 for adult women, 400-420 for adult men, doctors recommend a healthy diet that includes fish, nuts, milk and carbohydrates. For instance, three ounces of cooked halibut contains 90mg; one ounce of roasted almonds contains 80mg; one ounce of roasted cashews, 1/2 cup of soybeans and 1/2 cup of cooked spinach all have 75mg; and two biscuits of Shredded Wheat cereal have 55mg.

Other great sources include baked potatoes, oatmeal, peanuts, wheat bran, yogurt, bran flakes, baked beans, avocados, kidney beans, lentils, pinto beans, bananas, whole wheat bread, a milk chocolate bar, reduced fat milk, raisins and chocolate pudding. A magnesium supplement can also be taken in cases of a magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium Supplements

There are many supplements that contain magnesium. These supplements help to regulate the body processes when they have failed. For instance, esomeprazole magnesium (also called nexium) is used in the treatment of gastro esophageal reflux disorder. This drug can relieve the symptoms of stomach back flow and heartburn, while also healing some of the esophagus damage caused by the condition.

Similarly, Aluminum-Magnesium Hydroxide Oral eases upset stomachs, working quickly to lower the acid content. Also, magnesium citrate is used to clear out the bowels prior to a colonoscopy or surgery. The chemical attracts water to the intestines via osmosis, thereby prompting bowel movements to clear out one’s system. It’s no surprise, then, that it’s also used to prevent kidney stones. Potassium magnesium citrate is another supplement administered to prevent the recurrence of kidney stones.

Magnesium Chloride

The uses of magnesium chloride run far and wide. Not only is a version of this substance used to salt the roads in the winter, but a high magnesium supplement can also help ease some of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, Epilepsy, Diabetes, Cancer, Heart Disease and Urinary Tract Infections for patients with Prostate Cancer. Some of the links are suggested by research but not necessarily proven beyond the shadow of a doubt.

However, researchers admit that magnesium and chloride have important functions that keep us young and healthy, aiding in gastric acid activity and rejuvenation, preventing the calcification of organs and tissues associated with aging.
