Low Carb Success Stories While Managing A Medical Condition

By Tracy Kerr-Walshe

Low carb success stories are about people able to control the amount of carbohydrates in their system by eating the right food while controlling a diagnosed medical condition like diabetes. With diabetes, you need to control your sugar levels, in order to avoid any adverse medical consequences.

Your medical doctor can advise you of the medications available to control diabetes and your dietitian can advise how to manage a low carb diet to control the amount of carbohydrates you are eating with your food. Avoiding candy, soda pops and other sugary foods, can help to control your blood sugar levels.

Your dietitian can also advise you on the alternative snacks you can eat, so that your metabolism continues the whole day. Instead of eating sugar candy as a snack, you may review your options and eat an apple or a pear. Your dietitian can also advise how to balance your nutrition. For example, if one snack has some carbs, you can balance it with another snack like some nuts, that have no carbs. This way, you can manage your blood sugar levels and avoid adverse health consequences.

Monitoring Your Carbohydrate Intake

If you have type II diabetes, you know that your carbohydrate intake must be strictly monitored in order to get your sugar readings under control. Typical guidelines for the diabetic patient require that you restrict your carbohydrate intake to 195 or less per day. The booklets your doctor provides give carbohydrate counts for many common foods, but these booklets can be confusing.

For example, vegetables are generally loaded with carbohydrates. One medium sized potato yields 30 carbohydrates, while a single slice of bread weighs in at approximately 15 carbohydrates on average. Meat, cheese and other dairy products are carbohydrate free. You’ve got to watch out for soda and juices for sure.

Finding Out The Right Foods

Trying to put together menus which are nutritious and beneficial to the diabetic patient can be a daunting prospect. You’ve got to figure out how to eat right and keep those carbs within your daily limit. Many diabetics become so frustrated, trying to adhere to the carb and sugar intake guidelines, that they basically give up.

Even when you stick to the rules, your sugar readings are disappointing. There seems to be no way out. Here, we take a look at how to beat the odds. Here are some low carb success stories that will show you how to take a proactive approach and give you a new approach that produces results.

A Radical Approach To Food

Type II diabetes is a disease characterized by the body’s inability to manage and regulate insulin. Straight sugar and carbohydrates both are metabolized improperly. Your heart and kidney function are at risk. You might well get your diabetes under control by using a radical approach to food.

In the case of type II diabetes, low carb success stories begin with an initial elimination of carbs. In one case, the patient hadn’t a clue that he had diabetes until he was scheduled for surgery for an unrelated problem.

Restricting Carb Intake

Hospital tests revealed his sugar reading approached 500, a critical reading indeed. Following the administration of medications to reduce the blood sugar, surgery was successfully performed. This man returned home with the admonition to restrict his carb intake to 195 per day.

He had been a lifelong soda drinker and a meat and potatoes diner. Now equipped with a sugar meter and sugar tests four times a day, he decided to cut out carbs and sugar completely. Although his menu was a bit boring, the result was a low carb success story to the Nth degree. One month later, his blood sugar readings were that of a normal person!

To make up for the lack of fiber, he used an OTC fiber supplement. He added vitamin supplements to get the necessary nutrients not furnished in his diet. Capsules of cinnamon and turmeric helped reduce his blood sugar.

This is truly the mother of low carb success stories. He gradually reintroduced carbs, in judicious amounts, into his diet. He’s no longer considered diabetic. You can do it too.

Diagnosis Of A Medical Condition

By avoiding foods with high carbs and sticking to low carb meals, you can control the amount of sugar in your blood. If you have symptoms of diabetes and have not been medically diagnosed, you should see a medical doctor immediately, so that you can be diagnosed with the correct medical condition. Once diagnosis is complete and diabetes is confirmed, then action can be taken to alleviate symptoms.

Your doctor will inform you of the type of foods to avoid and arrange for medication. Some of the medications have side effects, so you may want to look at relying less on medication and try to control the amount of carbohydrates by limiting the amount of carbs in your food. If you avoid sugary food like cheesecake and beverages like sodas, then you are on the way to controlling your diabetes.

You can ask the doctor to refer you to a dietitian who can help devise a low carb diet plan to meet your needs and help you become one of the many low carb success stories.
