Healthy Living Keeps The Doctor Away

By Myfawny Craighter

We hear it all the time that health prevention is the best cure. We’re told that all would be well if we just visit the dentist, the eye doctor, the OB/GYN and our regular physician each year.

We should get flu shots and regularly scheduled immunizations; women should receive annual pap smears and STD tests; men should get their prostates checked; Americans over 50 should be getting regular mammograms and colon cancer screenings.

Early Detection And Prevention

Yet, as of 2007, 17% of people under 65 lacked any kind of health insurance coverage and 15% admitted to having no primary physician at all. Even though modern science offers little miracles, healthy living depends, even more so, on early detection and prevention, not to mention sticking to a healthy diet and exercise schedule.

As the saying goes, "garbage in, garbage out." Eating the right foods is the most important step toward healthy living. Yet this simple matter of choice can also be one of the most difficult lifestyle modifications as well.

Healthy Eating Plans

Fats, salts and sugars are just so tasty and so convenient, they can be hard to resist! However, just about every healthy eating plan runs off the same principles. Eat more fruits, more vegetables, more fiber and more lean protein. Eat less saturated fat, less sodium, fewer carbohydrates and fewer calories.

When you dine out, review your options and try to avoid fried foods, ask for soup or salad instead. You may want to ask for a box so you can set half of your portion aside for later. You don’t have to give up your favorite foods, but you do have to eat them in moderation. There are a number of websites that offer healthy recipes and diet nutrition calculators to help you get started eating your way to disease prevention.

Exercise To Boost Fitness And Reduce Stress Levels

Exercise is another essential component of healthy living. It can be hard to get motivated at first, but you’ll notice increased mental clarity and a boost of energy that can be addicting. Your stress levels will decrease, your weight will stay under control and your mood will have a boost as well.

Additionally, you’ll be decreasing your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, colon cancer, stroke and back injury. Ideally, you should work out for 30 to 60 minutes at least four days a week.

Burning Off Calories With A Stationary Bike

If you can’t weave structured exercise like aerobics or sports into your schedule, then you can also burn off calories by riding a stationary bike or walking on a treadmill while you read or watch TV, by taking the stairs instead of the elevators, by walking instead of driving around the corner and by walking for fifteen minutes at a time throughout the day.

For people who are overweight, healthy living means creating a plan to lose weight. Healthy eating expert Cheryl Forberg, the resident nutritionist for the show "The Biggest Loser" offers the following advice to shed pounds and keep them off.

Omega-3s And Anti-Oxidants

First of all, don’t shy away from vital "anti-aging fat" omega-3s, which are found in items like walnuts, flaxseed, spinach, soybean oil, salmon, lake trout, herring and kale. Secondly, add anti-oxidants to your body every 4 to 6 hours by eating a fruit or vegetable to every meal. Thirdly, double your fiber intake to 25 to 35 grams per day, with cooked lentils, chickpeas, barley, apples, raspberries and cereal.

Next, decrease your calories, exercise portion control and stop before you’re full. It takes roughly 30 minutes for your mind to realize your stomach is full, so it’s okay to leave the table a little less than satisfied. Her fifth tip is to add more healthy fats, such as 1/4 cup of pistachios or almonds, a tablespoon of olive oil and a 1/4 cup of avocado.

Lastly, pack protein into every meal with white skinless chicken breast, pork, turkey, fat-free milk, egg whites and beans.

Did You Know?

Did you know that the United States is now officially the fattest nation? That really does not bode well for the children that are growing up in this fast food age culture. With so many people topping the scale into obesity, it has finally reached a crisis.

Billions of dollars are spent each year on medical bills alone that are due to being significantly overweight. And being overweight has now become the most accepted form prejudice. Airlines make overweight passengers buy two seats. This has to come to a stop and the weight has to drop.
