Healthy Eating Habits With Smaller Balanced Meals And SnacksBy Myfawny CraighterDeveloping healthy eating habits is one of the better ways to lose weight and improve your health. Most people eat three large meals a day, but the better option these days, is to eat five to six small balanced meals throughout the day. This means, you can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and two to three snack breaks during the day. Each one of your meals and snacks should include a vegetable or fruit, a source of protein, and a cereal and/or starch. Using these alternatives, you should strive for balance and not eat too much of one and little of the other. In order to achieve this balance, you should review your options and divide your plate into three separate parts. Each part of the plate represents a main food group and is also representative of a portion size to meet your needs. Fruit and vegetables should take up one half of your plate, one quarter should be sources of protein, while the final quarter, should consist of grains and starches for the fiber your body needs. Small Portions With A Small To Medium PlateTo take off those pounds, it is important that you count the number of calories you are consuming. This can be done by monitoring the amount of food you are eating and controlling the size of your portions. There are a number of ideas you can use to achieve this goal. They include reading labels on food packaging very carefully and measure the portions you eat, and eating from a small to medium size plate rather than a large plate. Avoid Eating SecondsEating a meal on a smaller plate (even a salad plate) helps to trick your mind you are eating a large meal. This way, you will only eat enough food as the plate will hold. Whatever you do, do not opt for seconds, as it will defeat the objective of using a smaller plate. Instead, think about the snack you will have before your next main meal. When you are at a restaurant, and you want to stay true to your small portions, you should not feel obligated to eat a large meal. Instead, eat a portion of the meal, then request for the rest of the meal to be wrapped, so you can take it home. Your Most Important Meal Of The DayYour first meal each day starts with a healthy breakfast. As this is the most important meal of the day, where you break the fast after your overnight sleep, then you need to include healthy choices for your breakfast. If you want to control your weight, then you should eat breakfast in order to kick start the motors in your body. Just eating a healthy breakfast gives you energy, fuels the metabolism and helps you cope with stress during the day. It also gives your body the essential nutrients it needs and fuels the brain much the same way that gas fuels your car! Vrroooom! Avoid Eating More At Night When Your Metabolism Is At Its LowestMaintaining your metabolism level helps to keep your body healthy. People who skip breakfast tend to eat more during the day and also eat more at night when the metabolism is at its lowest point. This can add up to extra pounds and increasing the need for weight reduction. If you maintain your nutrition with a healthy breakfast, then you may not need to lose weight as you will not feel hungry throughout the day. Ideas For A Healthy BreakfastIf you are looking for ideas for a healthy breakfast, then you could include one to two slices of whole grain bread with peanut butter and a banana, plain yogurt with berries and flax or muesli, high fiber cereal with soy milk or skim milk and an apple. You do not need to eat all of these food choices in the one breakfast, you can alternate with different food choices each morning, in order to keep your portions small. Using these tips and ideas will help you with developing healthy eating habits.
