Hand Sanitizing Wipes Widely Used In Schools And Hospitals

By Veronica Tripplethorn

In today’s environment everyone is looking for ways to get things done faster, instantly if you will, and that even holds true when it comes to ways to keep their hands clean. Perhaps that is one reason why products such as hand sanitizing wipes and gels are stocked on the shelves in almost every supermarket and drugstore.

They are widely used in schools and hospitals and proclaim to be 99.9% effective against germs, offering a convenient way to fight the spreading of disease without the use of soap and water. In the United States alone it is estimated that over $1 billion dollars a year is spent on these products.

Soap And Water

However, some people feel that these products may not be as effective as advertised and you may be better off with soap and water handwashing. Some experts feel that disinfecting wipes will actually spread germs and infections rather than prevent them. One of the particular infections they refer to is staphylococcus, which affects around 100,000 people in the United States each year.

Using hand sanitizing wipes improperly may actually spread bacteria rather than kill them, according to a meeting of specialists at the American Society for Microbiology. While many of the hand sanitizer wipes are effective they must be used properly because if they are used on the hands or any surface and then used on another hand or surface, then there is the chance of spreading live bacteria to a previously uncontaminated hand or surface.

The Best Way To Prevent Spread Of Diseases

Frequently cleaning hands with soap and water is still one of the best ways to prevent the spread of diseases, especially at schools where the spread of germs and viruses is common and is responsible for much absenteeism. The Journal of Pediatrics did say that there is also some benefit from the frequent use of hand sanitizers and hand sanitizer wipes.

There have been a few studies done in schools where some students used soap and water to wash their hands and others used hand sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer gel several times a day.

Although hand washing is still the preferred method of preventing the spread of germs and diseases, the study also showed that the gels and wipes also play a role in keeping children healthy. It is a low cost and simple way to review your options and help ensure that the children will live a healthier life, which is obviously the main concern.

More Facts About Hand Sanitizers

What is the main ingredient in a hand sanitizer?
The ingredients in your hand sanitizer can vary greatly depending on what brand you use and whether or not it contains alcohol or another germ killing agent. If it contains alcohol it will either have isopropanol, ethanol or n-propanol.

There are sanitizers that contain other ingredients that will kill bacteria and germs such as triclosan and benzalkonium chloride. But you need to be aware that triclosan has been proven to be a carcinogenic when combined with chlorine. It is also found in toxicology reports when examining waste water. Other inactive ingredients that are used to make the hand sanitizer thicker may include: polyacrylic acid, glycerin, and propylene glycol.
