Hand Sanitizer Defending You Against Infection

By Veronica Tripplethorn

Do you use a hand sanitizer? You may not be aware of it but somewhere between 10,000 and 10 million microorganisms are alive and well on each of your hands. Perhaps the greatest medical discovery was the connection between microorganisms and disease. Less than 150 years ago surgeons were performing surgeries without washing hands and the death rate from infection was very high.

Fortunately, many communicable diseases that were once passed from person to person are now being seen less and less, due to the invention of antibacterial hand sanitizer products. Because the connection between microorganisms and disease has been realized, a whole new era of health with a better way to review your options and longer life has become possible.

Defending Yourself Against Infection And Disease

It has long been recommended that washing the hands often with soap and hot water is the best defense against germs and disease. It is also recommended that the duration of the hand washing should last the length of time it takes to sing the "Happy Birthday" song.

Surgeons scrub their hands thoroughly before donning their gloves in case one is punctured during an operation. Other medical personnel, along with food handlers are required by law to wash hands before work, several times during work and after visiting the restroom.

Killing Viruses And Bacteria On Your Hands

Hand sanitizer is a product that is used when washing the hands with soap and water is either impractical or impossible. A gel hand sanitizer is usually made from an alcohol base, which is applied directly to the hands and rubbed in, and it dries almost immediately.

Does hand sanitizer gel help to prevent disease and illness? Considering the fact that a substance that contains at least 65% alcohol by volume, and most hand sanitizers do, will kill close to 99% of all viruses and bacteria it comes in contact with, then the answer would most certainly have to be yes. Of course there is no way of actually killing every microorganism or germ but clean hands are the best line of defense.

Contain Concentrated Alcohol To Kill Germs

Hands are the primary carriers of germs and microorganisms, as they come in contact with everything, including the food that you put into your body. Bank tellers, cashiers and many other professionals come into quite a bit of contact with things that numerous other people have touched, making them ideal carriers of germs.

For all people, a lot of germs would not be spread quite as much if a hand sanitizer, combined with regular and routine handwashing were followed. The reason that these sanitizer gels are so effective is because they contain alcohol in a very concentrated form and alcohol is known to kill the microorganisms that cause disease.

More Facts About Hand Sanitizers

Take a moment and think really long and hard about how often you touch things. It may be the surface of the counter at your local fast food restaurant. It may be the tissue you use to wipe your child’s nose.

The fact is that we come into contact with germ laden surfaces continuously during the day. Even if you stay at home you are still coming into contact with potentially harmful germs that could make you very ill.

The solution to this dilemma has been for companies to produce hand sanitizers. But how effective is that hand sanitizer? One of the biggest questions that have surfaced recently is whether or not a hand sanitizer in fact makes germs stronger and more resistant to being wiped out.

With the recent scare of the H1:N1 (Swine Flu) epidemic, people want to feel safer.
