Gluten Sensitivity And Changing Eating Habits

By Hazel Hawkins

A serious condition called gluten sensitivity is a problem for many people who are afflicted with celiac disease, and it can make a person very ill. This is because when gluten is consumed, the immune system within the body will attack the small intestine the way it normally would a disease or bacteria.

This attack makes the patient very ill and does not allow them to eat the way they should, thus resulting in malnutrition. Gluten is a grain byproduct and can be commonly found in crackers, pasta and bread.

Seek Medical Advice If Suspect Gluten Sensitivity

Sensitivity to gluten can lead to many other chronic diseases, such as anemia, lymphoma and osteoporosis. In children, it can cause the bones to be weak and grow slowly if left untreated. For this reason, if you think your child may be gluten intolerant because he or she has persistent vomiting or diarrhea, or is rapidly losing weight, then you need to be sure that you take them to the doctor right away and not ignore the symptoms.

Symptoms include gas and bloating, weight loss, weakness, tiredness, and drastic changes in your bowel movements. This adverse reaction to wheat proteins is not the same thing as a wheat allergy.

No Real Known Causes Of Gluten Sensitivity

Gluten sensitivity has no real known causes. Like many other autoimmune diseases, it is thought to be genetic. Certain genes in certain people seem to increase the likelihood of them developing celiac disease. A family history is often a good indication of whether or not you will get it. There are, however, some viruses and infections that seem to have the ability to affect your immune system and make it sensitive to gluten.

Gluten sensitivity may only be treated by making changes to your eating habits and following a celiac disease diet. Avoiding gluten products is the only way to stay healthy. This means a review of your options and cutting out all food or drink products, including alcohol, that are made from wheat, barley or rye.

Gluten Free Foods

You can still consume eggs, fish, meat, fruits and vegetables. Flours made from corn, rice, buckwheat, potatoes and soybeans are also ok. You may need to make a temporary switch from cow’s milk to soy based milk or goat’s milk. One last thing to look at is the vitamins you take daily. Many contain gluten.

If yours do, then you will need to switch to a different type of vitamin. If you follow these instructions you should see an improvement in your health in just a few weeks time.

Did You Know?

There is always the scare of undercooked meats and vegetables. Recent news reports of botulism, mad cow disease and other deadly germs have all of us cooking our food until it is charred.

The idea of raw food diets petrifies us to the point of boiling all of our food until there are no nutrients remaining. It does not have to be this way. A raw food diet is a healthy lifestyle that can be safe if you know what you are doing and know how to prepare certain foods for your consumption.
