Gluten Intolerance And Gluten Free Diets

By Hazel Hawkins

There are many people in the world who suffer from gluten intolerance. Some people have a wheat allergy, while others suffer from something much worse. Celiac (also spelled coeliac) disease is one of these issues that make eating anything containing gluten a problem. The only thing that can be done for this disease is to never eat gluten again. A celiac disease diet is the only way for people with the disease to stay healthy.

People who suffer from celiac disease have some major issues. A protein that is found in gluten reacts badly with their intestinal lining, causing it to deteriorate. This problem leads to other heath issues, such as bowel problems and mouth ulcers. In children, celiac sprue disease can stunt their growth.

Avoiding Side Effects By Eating Gluten Free Foods

More people suffer from this disease than you might think. Some doctors say that one in every one hundred people or so probably suffer from the disease. The reason that it isn’t better diagnosed is because it can be hard to spot. Many people with the disease don’t even realize there is a problem. Celiac disease is genetic as well, so if someone in your family has it, then you are more likely to get it as well. The only way to avoid side effects currently is to only eat gluten free foods for the duration of your life.

Those who suffer from chronic diseases, like celiac disease, are not the only people who have to live on a gluten free diet. There are some people who suffer from gluten intolerance, or allergies, and other people choose to not eat gluten for other reasons.

Gluten Free Products

Because more people are choosing not to eat gluten, or they are not able to because of the disease or allergy, there are more gluten free foods available for consumption and purchase, such as gluten free pizza. However, the label "gluten free" may be misleading. Exactly how "gluten free" are these foods? Still, for someone who only has allergies it is probably fine to eat the foods that are labeled "gluten free products."

However, if you have coeliac disease, then you should review your options and avoid all gluten, even trace amounts. This will probably mean cooking all of your food yourself, or only eating fresh foods when dining out.

Following A Strict Gluten Free Diet

Those who suffer from celiac disease know how harmful gluten can be to them. These people and those with wheat allergies have to follow a strict gluten free diet. Gluten intolerance means that you can never have an ordinary piece of bread or a pizza at the local eatery.

There are not a whole lot of foods that someone with these problems can have and there is currently no cure for celiac disease.

Did You Know?

There is always the scare of undercooked meats and vegetables. Recent news reports of botulism, mad cow disease and other deadly germs have all of us cooking our food until it is charred.

The idea of raw food diets petrifies us to the point of boiling all of our food until there are no nutrients remaining. It does not have to be this way. A raw food diet is a healthy lifestyle that can be safe if you know what you are doing and know how to prepare certain foods for your consumption.
