Perfect Fitting Footwear

By Spiridon Rafter

One in every six Americans, or over 43 million, suffers with some type of problem or trouble with their feet, which in many cases is a result of improperly fitting shoes.

When checking out the different shoe stores, keep in mind that everyone is susceptible to foot and ankle injuries; however, there are some things that you can do to help avoid this from happening to you. The basic principal of a good fit means that you should never force your foot to conform to footwear, as the shoes should conform to the shape of your feet.

Of course style is often the key consideration when choosing a pair of shoes; however, from a practical standpoint the durability of construction that will keep your feet comfortable and protect them should be the major concern.

Bad Footwear Can Cause Foot Disorders

From casual shoes to dress shoes and from snow boots to cowboy boots, if they do not fit properly, then they can cause corns, bunions, calluses and other types of disabling foot disorders. Some suggestions for avoiding ill fitting footwear includes being sure that both feet are measured every time you shop for shoes, as your foot size actually increases when you get older.

Be sure to try on both shoes and shop for shoes in the late afternoon or evening, since your feet will normally swell and become larger after sitting or standing during the day. Have the shoe salesperson measure your feet to make sure you know your exact shoe size. When you have the shoes on you should be able to freely wiggle all of your toes.

If The Shoes Feel Too Tight, Do Not Buy Them

Sizes do vary among the different styles and brands so be sure to review your options and judge a shoe by how well it fits on your foot regardless of the shoe size marked on the box. Fit your new shoes to your largest foot as most people have one foot larger than the other, and walk around in them to make sure that they do fit and are comfortable.

When trying on footwear remember that there really is no "breaking in" period, so if the shoes feel too tight do not buy them. Many of the high heeled shoes have a narrow, pointed toe box that consequently crowds toes and forces them into an unnatural position.

As the height of the heel increases, the pressure exerted on the foot may double, which places more pressure on the forefoot as it is forced into the pointed toe box. This may be a discomfort that young, fashionably conscious women are willing to put up with in the name of fashion, yet prolonged usage will cause problems, maybe even disfigurement, sooner or later.
