Eggs And Cholesterol As Part Of A Balanced Diet

By Tracy Kerr-Walshe

Eggs and cholesterol can be part of a balanced diet and may not affect your overall health. But, if you already have too much cholesterol in your arteries, you may be a candidate for a heart condition, then you should continue to avoid foods like eggs with their high level of cholesterol.

If your doctor informs you, you have healthy arteries and there is no problem in eating a little cholesterol with your food, then you may have one or two eggs as part of a balanced diet. You should avoid eating too many eggs. As usual, too much of anything is no good for you. Just like one glass of wine with food, may be good for your health, but drinking excessively can be disastrous, especially for your hard working liver.

As with any food, you may look to eat eggs and cholesterol in moderation, as part of a balanced diet.

Although, some of us could have sworn that the experts agreed that eggs had too much cholesterol and they were to be avoided, but what’s this now about eggs being healthy and essential to a balanced diet?

Changes To Thinking About Eggs And Cholesterol

Eggs have cholesterol, cholesterol is bad for you, therefore eggs and cholesterol must be bad. So where does the good part enter into the equation? It seems like the consensus on what’s good for us or not is constantly undergoing change. Not that change is bad—most of us weren’t aware before that blueberries were chock full of antioxidants.

But other changes are quite bizarre because they contradict each other. It was widely accepted that coffee had too much caffeine that stunted your growth, and then years later the word got out that coffee might prevent cancer.

Eating Too Many Eggs May Not Be Good For You

So what’s the real deal with eggs and cholesterol? Are eggs really good for you or not? There’s some new consensus on the issue but you might take it with many grains of salt, because who knows when opinions will change.

It’s a fact that eggs contain a considerable amount of cholesterol. It’s probably bad to eat a huge amount of eggs, because too much cholesterol in the blood is known to be associated with developing heart disease. But almost any type of food falls under the same rule, even things that are good for you and essential like proteins and carbohydrates.

Part Of A Healthy And Balanced Diet

It’s fine to eat many kinds of food as long as you eat them in moderation. People often dichotomize foods into either being completely healthy or totally bad for you, but they’re not always one or the other.

In this case, eggs and cholesterol aren’t totally bad for you and eggs can be a part of a healthy diet. One egg a day is probably as much as you should eat, but if you already have high cholesterol this might not be a good idea. All of the cholesterol of the egg is in the yolk, so you can eat only the egg white instead.

Balancing Out Your Food

We’ll probably never know the exact properties of food for sure, but one thing we can be certain is that balance is of utmost importance in any diet. As long as you balance eggs and cholesterol the way that you balance red meat and protein, bread and carbs, candy and sugar, you don’t have to worry too much about being at risk.

So go ahead and eat a boiled egg for breakfast and treat yourself to an omelet every now and then.

The Need To Reduce Cholesterol In Your Diet

Unless of course, your doctor has told you your arteries are full of cholesterol and you need to reduce the amount of cholesterol in your system. Then you should avoid eggs and other foods high in cholesterol, until medical opinion tells you otherwise.

If you have been advised to go on a low cholesterol diet, then you need to see a dietitian who will advise you which foods are low in cholesterol or have no cholesterol. You can also read the nutritional information on food products to confirm if the cholesterol level is high.

Zero Cholesterol In Food Products

There are now, new food products where the amount cholesterol is zero. These products include healthy snacks, biscuits, dairy free chocolates and many other food products. You can look at the health food section at your favourite food store, or run to the health food store, where you will find a wider range of food without cholesterol.

These days, there are many options to control the food you eat, even with eggs and cholesterol.
