Climbing Mount Everest With Many Health Hazards And Expectations

Climbing Mount Everest, which is the highest mountain in the world, requires some special equipment. Climbing apparatus recommended by experienced Everest climbers includes: harnesses, fixed ropes, jumars, ice axes, crampons, carabiners, head lamps, rappel devices, ski poles, altimeters and goggles.

Climbers will wear plastic frost-proof climbing boots, a base layer of thermals, a second layer of fleece jackets and trousers, a down suit, a bandana to keep the sun away, a neoprene face mask, a thick balaclava, a fleece hat, two pairs of thin gloves, a few pairs of mountain mitts and Gore-Texx over-mitts.

Preparing For Health Hazards

Trekkers bring a spare set of thermals to wear at night and five or six pairs of socks (some for walking, some for sleeping in). As for food, boil-in-the-bag meals, Spam, chocolate and biscuits are consumed. As the altitude increases, the body gets less hungry, yet it should not be forgotten that 6,000 calories are burned a day on the mountain. High-calorie meals are essential.

Death by heart attack, avalanche or a nasty fall, HAPE (high altitude pulmonary edema), HACE (high altitude cerebral edema), hypothermia and impaired judgment from lack of oxygen seem to be the most obvious dangers of a Mount Everest expedition, but there can be many other dangers along the way.

Some people have been known to develop coughs so bad that throat tissue gets hacked up. Broken bones can be lethal if the Mount Everest climbers can’t reach an area where rescue teams can transport them to safety.

Difficulties In Eating And Drinking At High Altitudes

Sunburn of the nostrils, the roof of the mouth and other uncommon body parts can make eating and drinking difficult. Sometimes the stomach stops digesting food at high altitudes as well, thus preventing the body from functioning normally.

The mental preparation for climbing Mt. Everest is nearly as important as the physical prep work. Mount Everest climbers should be prepared to deal with possible periods of solitude and spending long periods at high altitudes. One can’t expect to be carried up the mountain or walking along easy mountain pathways that have been clear-cut for centuries. There are portions of tricky terrain and 90-degree ice walls that one must traverse.

That being said, one should not only review their options and prepare for the arduous climbs, but also the down-time. Out of 49 days on the mountain, less than half will be spent actually climbing. The rest will be reserved for acclimatization and resting.

Typical Costs For Preparation And Climbing Mt Everest

Financially, one must also be prepared for climbing Mount Everest. Most people opt to join expeditions since Himalaya trekking is not recommended. A typical 70-day trip will cost around $37,000 for hotel, plane tickets, road transport, camping, meals, oxygen supply, porters, guides and Sherpas.

One will also need to buy a return flight to Kathmandu, tip the Sherpas and purchase insurance. These additional expenses can tack on another $2,000. Some people wish to take a snow and ice course to prepare for climbing Everest, which costs around $800 for a five-day beginners course.

Then, of course, there’s the purchase of some gear like harnesses, ice axes, carabiners, ascender devices, crampons and boots, which could easily cost $500.
