Climb Mount Everest And Preparing To Face Extreme Conditions

Mount Everest base camp is a strange mixture of high stakes, money, pressure, media, fears and egos. This group of strangers may look like ordinary people, but their motivations to climb Mount Everest are a mixed bag.

Some are climbing Everest for corporate sponsors, while others may be filming a documentary. Some people are on a quest for self-exploration, while others are simply trying not to die at this point. You'll be feeling tired, weak, sick and cold at times; perhaps not like your "usual self."

Weird Effects Of High Altitude

You may be having weird dreams, headaches and hallucinations as you try to get acclimated to the high altitude. Before you get to this point, you'll want to be well prepared for what lies ahead. Once you're there, it's too late to hire extra guides or bring extra layers of clothes.

Having the right gear can help you climb Mt. Everest easier. The most popular type of shoes are the OneSport boots, which should be purchased 1-2 sizes bigger to accommodate all the layers of socks you'll be wearing.

Frostbite Prevention Measures

As for clothing, you'll need layers of Gore-tex over fleece, a lightweight jacket, caps to keep the sun off your head, face masks by Gorak Shep for the upper echelons of the Himalayas and a heavy down suit made by North Face or Mountain Hardware for the summit.

Thin water-resistant gloves, heavier Gore-tex mitts and extra pairs of socks are essential. You'll want a spare down suit to wear during the night. North Face harnesses, jumars, carabiners, fixed ropes, a 15-meter glacier rope and an ice axe will all come in handy as you climb Everest.

You can't possibly climb Mount Everest 24/7 to the summit, so in addition to climbing gear, you'll also need the proper camp equipment. Big, inexpensive tents manufactured by North Face, Marmot and Mountain Hardware are the standard at the camps.

Two Or Three Sleeping Bags

The extra space to dry clothes and spread out will be much appreciated on a large expedition. Sleeping bags are where you should consider spending the extra money. You'll need down with at least 1,000 grams of filling. You'll need two or three of them.

Even though they'll soak up lots of your perspiration while climbing Everest, you can set them up on top of your tent on the sunny days to dry off quickly. Double layer pads by ThermaRest or RidgeRest will protect you from the freezing rocks.

Cooking Your Food

Hiring a cook for Camp 2 will make your Everest expedition much more enjoyable and will ensure that you maintain your health. For higher camps, you can bring two small Titanium burners, a few light pots, plastic mugs, spoons, a Leatherman knife, potholders, matches, sturdy lighters and 20 to 30 gas cans. Also, don't forget Aqua Care water purification liquid.

When you climb Mount Everest, you'll have to deal with other Everest climbers along the way, for better or for worse. Remember that everyone is struggling with the same wash of emotions, such as fear, joy, triumph, anxiety, frustration, weariness and excitement.

A Deeply Personal Experience

Your fellow climbers will be fatigued, suffering from headaches and fighting off illness. Though surrounded by people in your expedition, the Everest climb is a deeply personal experience. Some would say it's even religious.

While you're trapped inside your own head of thoughts, try to keep an eye out for moments where you could make a difference in someone else's life. It's true that "what happens on the mountain, stays on the mountain," so if you were to look the other way when someone needed help, no one would blow you in.
