However, in the modern Western world, chocolates are considered to be little more than a dessert treat or an indulgence to be consumed in moderation. But opinions are changing. In recent years there has been a great deal of scientific research that now points to numerous health benefits that people might enjoy from imbibing in chocolate candy and delicacies that previously were thought to be nothing but trouble, except to the taste buds. Moderate Consumption Of Chocolate Can Be BeneficialChocoholics around the globe are now delighting in these reports, which state that good quality dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate, when eaten in moderation, are not considered detrimental to health but can actually be quite beneficial. Almost everyone has heard people speculate on the possibility that acne is caused, or at least worsened by eating chocolates. However, this is a myth and it was recently disproved through research done by two different scientific studies. The end result of those studies was that there was no correlation found between the eating of chocolate products and having an acne outbreak. Research Shows No Definitive Relationship Between Acne And ChocolateThese research studies were conducted by two very reputable and well-respected organizations; the University of Pennsylvania and the United States Naval Academy. In addition to these specific research studies on the correlation between the consumption of chocolates sweets and the incidence of acne, there have also been numerous studies that have shown, in general, no definitive relationship between a person’s diet and acne. The other major myth about eating sweets is that it contributes to tooth decay. However, this myth has also been debunked by the Eastman Dental Center. The center conducted research which showed that the commonly known cacao concoctions actually contain some very beneficial phosphates, as well as other minerals. These elements serve to minimize the effects of the sugar that is an ingredient. Antibacterial Properties In The Cacao LeavesAs a result of these findings, the researchers concluded that chocolates are the least likely treats or desserts, such as chocolate cake, to end up causing tooth decay and fostering cavities. In a separate study conducted at the Osaka University in Japan, researchers discovered that there are also several antibacterial properties in the cacao that were very effective at counteracting tooth decay. Of course, proper dental hygiene and brushing regularly is a must. It has been reported that dark chocolate has the additional benefit of containing a fairly high level of antioxidants, which are important in battling the damage in our bodies that can be caused by free radicals. Additionally, the cacao, which is foundational to all chocolate edibles, has been found to contain various phytochemicals and flavanoids that are both laden with health giving properties.
