Calorie Content Of Foods Affecting Your Weight Management Plan

By Tracy Kerr-Walshe

Calorie content of foods can be read from nutritional information on food labels. If you want to manage your diet and avoid food with high amounts of fat and mountains of calories, then you should always read the nutritional information before you buy any food products, including snacks. Do not be believe names like natural, healthy and other misleading terms. The truth lies in the nutritional information.

If you want to know how to read the information and find out what the average daily intakes for various food ingredients, you should contact a dietitian, who can review your options and guide you through a low calorie diet plan. The dietitian will explain what all the funny names on the label mean and how they affect your calorie count.

Looking At The Calorie Content Of Food

In every dieters life comes a moment when he or she has to start looking at the calorie content of foods. No longer is it enough to simply try to cut meal portions down a little bit and to cut out those sweets.

This works for a while, but once you get closer to your ideal weight, you have to up your standards a little bit. You have to eat better and better if you want to keep losing weight. Keeping track of the calorie content of common foods is the best and most obvious way to do this.

Calorie Chart On The Wall

In my house, we have a calorie chart on the wall. We have had it ever since 1996 when I first went on my very first diet. Back then, I was completely optimistic. I thought that dieting would be an easy thing that would be over in six months.

I figured that I would eat extremely healthy foods until I lost all of my weight, then get back on a normal meal plan. I didn’t realize that dieting and exercise are a lifetime program. You can’t simply do it for a little while and expect it to stick.

Count The Calorie Content Of All Foods

I only really started counting the calorie content of foods last year. Before that, I was pretty sporadic about it at best. The thing with counting calories is that you have to do it constantly or you should not do it at all. If you only count the calorie content of food that you should be eating and ignore the snacks, you are doing yourself a disservice.

You will be convincing yourself that you’re eating a healthier meal plan than you are, resulting in a stagnant diet or even actual weight gain. You might as well not start at all if you’re going to do something like this. It is ultimately extremely counterproductive.

Coming Up With A Good Estimation

Looking at the calorie content of foods doesn’t have to be entirely accurate, however. If you want to know the exact calorie content of foods, after all, you need to eat only processed and prepackaged foods that have been laid out and measured for you. Nevertheless, with common foods, a calorie counter chart will help you come up with a good estimation.

As long as you weigh out the different ingredients in food, you can always be within a few percentage points of correct. The important thing is to keep track of things and do your best.

Tips To Manage Your Calorie Intake

But there are now more ways to manage your calories intake. You can read the nutritional and calorie information on food labels. You can read the calorie content on breakfast cereals and food ingredients you buy for your cooking. When you are shopping for food ingredients, you may even take the calorie chart with you. There are now miniature charts that look like diaries, where you can flip from page to page for different food ingredients. I got mine after my dietitian told me where to find it.

When you are buying food, look for low calorie and low fat alternatives. Rather than buying full cream milk, you can buy skim milk, or even soy milk.

Before you go on any diet, see your doctor to confirm if there are any reasons you should not go on a low calorie or a low fat diet. If you have any medical condition that will be worsened by a low calorie diet, then your doctor will give you medical advice so that your health is not adversely affected. Your doctor may also refer you to a dietitian to guide you through a low calorie diet plan, that will take into account any medical conditions you may have.

Taking the advice of a dietitian, you will learn the right way of finding the calorie content of foods.
